The chief of artillery goes back to his desk
Special orders returned Colonel A. J. Gonzales to his duties as chief of artillery of the department, his temporary work on James Island and in St. Andrew’s Parish having been discharged to the commanding general’s satisfaction. Gonzales — Cuban-born, and Beauregard’s friend — spent the war trying to get heavy guns for a coast that never had enough.
