Anderson reported that Captain Foster had told several gentlemen in Charleston more than he should have about the work being done in the harbor. Washington’s standing instruction that winter was to do nothing that might add to the excitement — which, in practice, meant doing very little at all.

The senior officer off Charleston bar reported that at 7.45 the previous evening the Azalea, lying off the north channel buoy, discovered a blockade runner close by and inshore of her. In the last winter of the war the runners were still coming, and still mostly getting through in the dark.
