Anderson’s command opened December 1860 in Fort Moultrie — a work built to fire seaward, with sand drifted level with its parapet in places and Sullivan’s Island cottages close enough for riflemen to shoot into it. He had about seventy men. Charleston had thousands, and a convention meeting in a fortnight.

Telegraphed to Richmond: “Enemy’s bombardment of Sumter has slackened considerably in last two days, shelling principally at night, to cut off communications. No casualties since” the last report. The nightly boat to the fort was now the target.
