South Carolina’s secession convention assembled at Columbia, and adjourned almost at once to Charleston because smallpox was reported in the capital. The delegates came down by train the next day to a city that had been waiting for them since 6 November.

Confederate forces evacuated Rockville, on Wadmalaw Island, with a skirmish on Chisolm’s Island the same day. The Confederate line was drawing back toward the mainland exactly as Lee had directed.
