Submerged (1863)
The sand-and-palmetto work across the narrow northern neck of Morris Island. It held through the assault of 18 July 1863, in which the 54th Massachusetts led the attacking brigade, and through a siege of fifty-eight days; the garrison was withdrawn on the night of 6-7 September 1863.
