The General's Bombproof, Folly Island

A low dugout framed in heavy timber and roofed with barrels and brush, half-swallowed by the island's scrub: the bomb- and splinter-proof of General Gillmore on Folly Island, by Haas & Peale's title.

Folly was the staging island — the masked batteries and the concealed build-up that opened the campaign were laid out here — and the department commander's own shelter was this hole in the brush. His biography is published among this site's people; the architecture of his safety was barrels, sand and branches like everyone else's.
