Morris Island is where Haas & Peale kept their studio and made the photographs in the Library of Congress album titled, on its cover, Seige of Charleston Illustrated. This is the ground those photographs were made on, drawn by a soldier.
The catalog dates it loosely to the whole war. Gillmore took command in the Department of the South in June 1863 and the Morris Island operations ran from July to September, which bounds it more tightly than the catalog does — but the record’s own date is the one printed above.
