Fire insurance survey · June 1888
Sanborn fire insurance map, June 1888
Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.
Two years after the earthquake, and the sheet that proves the point about numbers: its index lists the Lutheran church at 405 King Street, which is where St. Matthew’s stands today. The 1888 numbering is the modern numbering.
Because the 1884 edition gives King Street the same overall run and puts the same blocks in the same ranges, the renumbering had already reached King Street before May 1884 — which is why neither Sanborn can convert a wartime address.
