Two hundred and thirty-eight Confederate rounds in a day, and the practice from Simkins and Cheves reported unsatisfactory. “Notwithstanding the fire of our batteries, the enemy still progresses in his defensive and offensive works on Morris Island. Working parties are reported behind every sand-hill.”

“Thirteen shots from Swamp Angel since last report; 1 struck flat at the wharf, but did not sink her. There is a new stockade being put up on the left of Gregg.” Losing a lighter at the wharf would have cost the fort more than losing another yard of wall.
