The equinoctial gale came in from the east-southeast with heavy rain and almost no shot was fired all day. The New Ironsides and four monitors rode it out at anchor off Morris Island with little motion while the wooden vessels rolled and pitched heavily. Long trains of wagons were seen coming down the beach and unloading at Battery Gregg.

“The Yankees have done no work to-day at Gregg because of our sharpshooters. Forty-four shots fired to-day at fort (18 missed), mostly from small rifle guns.” Fort Sumter's marksmen fired across thirteen hundred yards of water at men with shovels.
