A steady Confederate fire from Simkins and Cheves against Wagner and Gregg through twenty-four hours, answered in the afternoon by a few Federal shots from Gadberry Hill at Fort Johnson that did no damage. On Morris Island the enemy’s works crept toward completion.

The chief of artillery reported that the removal of five guns en barbette for the new James Island lines had already been prescribed and was nearly carried out — one an 8-inch shell gun from Secessionville, one a dismounted 32-pounder lying in a redoubt. The city’s artillery was constantly being reshuffled.
