A train, a governor and a labor detail
A dry note from the engineer’s office: “The agent and train had left at the appointed hour. Of course, Governor Pickens, on arriving two hours after, could not put his negroes on or see the agent.” Impressed labor for the Charleston works came in by rail, on a timetable, and the friction over it fills the files.
