Beauregard directed his chief engineer to examine Hobcaw Bluff on the Cooper River near Mount Pleasant. The city’s defenses were being pushed out into the rivers behind Charleston as well as across the harbor mouth.

A strange vessel was reported with the Federal fleet, flying the English flag at the main peak and the United States flag at the fore. She was thought to be a captured blockade runner, and left for the north with the mail. The Confederates counted the fleet every morning and read a great deal into it.
