1863Fort Sumter

Six hundred and twenty-five shots in a day

At seven in the morning the Federals opened again from Gregg, Wagner and the low battery east of Gregg, concentrating on Fort Sumter with occasional help from the monitors. By dark 625 shots had been fired at the fort and only 90 had missed. Then they stopped briefly and started again with two guns and a mortar for the night.

Where can the guns be had?

Beauregard referred a request for artillery to his chief of artillery “to designate where the guns called for can be had.” It was the department’s permanent question, and it rarely had a good answer.
