A Federal expedition from Hilton Head struck at the Charleston and Savannah Railroad at Pocotaligo and Coosawhatchie and was beaten off at the Caston and Frampton plantations after a hard day’s fighting. The railroad — Charleston’s lifeline south — was not cut. It survived every attempt until Sherman marched past it in 1865.

Two embrasures in Battery Gregg were unmasked in the morning; Simkins fired fifty-three shots with very satisfactory effect. With Gillmore gone — probably to Port Royal — and Federal troops moving down Folly Island, the commanding general expected a demonstration somewhere on the Third Military District.
