General Ripley forwarded a report and asked that application be made for the return of Brigadier General G. T. Anderson’s brigade, ordered away some weeks earlier: “This force was withdrawn from James Island, and its place cannot be well supplied.”

The engineer’s office reported that the department had no heavy timber left suitable for the shield being built at Fort Sumter; transportation had been asked for and had not come. The same day General Ripley asked for the return of a brigade withdrawn from James Island, whose place “cannot be well supplied.” Charleston was short of wood, guns and men at the same time.
