Reading the enemy’s dispatches
Thirty-two vessels inside the bar; Moultrie, Simkins and Cheves fired on Gregg and Wagner and, as usual, drew no reply. Colonel Johnson counted the Federal fleet at Port Royal — one steam frigate, two sloops of war, a cutter, eight gunboats and seventy-five transports — and the signal corps copied the day’s intercepted Yankee dispatches into the journal.
