Moultrie, Marion and Simkins fired on Gregg and Wagner; Cheves was silent because its garrison was working on the battery’s bomb-proof. Simkins threw 106 shots “but with what effect is unknown” — the recurring phrase of the Charleston siege, where nobody could see what their own shells did.
