From Sullivan’s Island: about one o’clock a monitor passed up the island at some distance until she was nearly abreast of Battery Marshall, and fired several shots about a mile short of it. Battery Marshall covered Breach Inlet — the channel the Hunley went out through three months later.

Gillmore reported to Halleck from Folly Island: “I keep up a slow fire on the ruins of Fort Sumter night and day. During the daytime, I fire mostly from mortars at low angles, in order to search the casemates on the channel front.” The same day Beauregard noted that the New Ironsides had moved once and not fired a shot since the David struck her, and thought her seriously injured.
