Another affair at Murray’s Inlet on the Waccamaw. The inlet was a favorite of small blockade runners and of the boat crews sent to burn them, and it changed hands, informally, several times a year.

Sixty-one mortar shells by day and thirty-one at night, of which thirty-five struck. “A portion of the shelling last night was evidently done to prevent work on the boom in front of the fort.” The boom kept boats off the gorge; both sides knew what it was worth.
