Department headquarters at Charleston answered an appeal for artillery with a sentence that describes the Confederate coast in 1862: “There are no guns to be had, except those at Ricco’s Bluff.” Every heavy gun on this coast had to be begged from Richmond, cast at Tredegar, or taken off a work somewhere else.

“Two volleys of 7 mortar shells were fired yesterday, one at 6 a.m., the other at 12 m. One negro severely wounded.” The Federal mortar batteries on Morris Island fired in salvoes so that the bursts came together over the fort's open interior.
