Relieved from duty in South Carolina, Beauregard returned the state volunteer forces to Governor Pickens and transferred command of the Confederate forces in Charleston Harbor to Colonel R. H. Anderson. He was in Virginia by June, and at Manassas in July. He came back to Charleston in September 1862 and stayed twenty months.
