Through early March 1863 the ironclads assembled in Port Royal Sound for the attack on Charleston — Passaic, Weehawken, Montauk, Patapsco, Catskill, Nantucket, Nahant, the armored frigate New Ironsides and the odd double-turreted Keokuk. Du Pont told Washington that nine ironclads could not take a city. He was told to try.

Haze, so no count of the fleet. The Brooke gun and a 10-inch lay on the berm of the sea face waiting for a boat. Seven shots were fired at the fort and all struck; one shell wounded two men. A quiet day, by the standards of Fort Sumter in 1864.
