On his first full day in office Lincoln read Anderson’s dispatch: Fort Sumter could be provisioned for about six weeks, and it would take twenty thousand men to relieve it by force. General Scott advised evacuation. The president did not decide for another three weeks.

The Brooke rifle was placed on the berm on the night of the second for transportation to the city. No shots were fired at the fort. Piece by piece, the artillery that had made Fort Sumter a fort was being taken out of it and mounted somewhere useful.
