1861Command

Richmond — or rather Montgomery — takes over

The Confederate government assumed control of military affairs at Charleston, taking the harbor batteries out of South Carolina’s hands. The state had begun the quarrel; the new central government would finish it. Governor Pickens kept the ceremony and lost the guns.

Wilson’s Store, and a new district at Beaufort

Skirmishing at Wilson’s Store as Sherman crossed into the Pee Dee country, and Major General Jacob D. Cox took command of the District of Beaufort. The war in South Carolina had moved off the coast for good.
