Pemberton telegraphed General Gist at Secessionville not to let his batteries waste ammunition — “they must not fire merely because they are fired at” — and warned him that Evans would probably attack near Legareville that night, in which case he was to demonstrate toward Grimball’s to keep the enemy from reinforcing.

Dahlgren forwarded the names of a number of small craft, prizes and others, “which are no longer of any service” in Charleston Harbor, and advised their sale. The navy that had spent four years trying to get into this harbor spent the summer of 1865 clearing it out.
