Skirmishing on James Island, with affairs on John’s Island the same day and the next. Benham’s two divisions were ashore and probing toward the Confederate line at Secessionville; Hunter had told him not to attack it.

John Fraser & Co.

A letter from John Fraser & Co. — the Charleston house that, through its Liverpool partner Fraser, Trenholm & Co., financed much of Confederate blockade running — was forwarded through department headquarters. Its head, George Trenholm, became Confederate Secretary of the Treasury the following year.
