An affair at Port Royal Ferry. The ferry was the door between the Federal sea islands and the Confederate mainland, and it was pushed at, from one side or the other, a dozen times during the war.

The Ironsides moves out over the bar

“No shots since last report. The Ironsides has moved out over the bar, and lies now about 6 miles off.” The big armored frigate that had led the 1863 attack now spent her time at anchor, watched every morning from the fort she had failed to take.
