General Wright reported to Hunter what a deserter from the 47th Georgia had told his pickets: twelve regiments on James Island, some 8,000 men. Five days later the Federals were ordered off the island altogether.

Beauregard’s headquarters commended the zeal of a Confederate expedition that captured “certain negroes” opposite Fields Point on the Ashepoo, and directed that they be turned over to the provost-marshal in Charleston to be returned to their owners. Three weeks after the Combahee raid, the war on this coast was being fought, openly and in writing, over the people the raid had carried away.
