“The Hope arrived about sunset to-day, bringing a mail and late newspapers.” Commander Marchand’s note off Charleston is a reminder of the other war on this station — months on an open roadstead, watching a city you could see the steeples of, waiting for coal, stores and news.

Fourteen shots at the fort, six striking; six monitors inside the bar; wagons hauling to the middle battery and Gregg, “some with lumber, some I suppose with ammunition.” The Federal build-up on Morris Island never stopped, and neither did the reporting of it.
