An expedition set out from Beaufort up the St. Mary’s River on the Georgia–Florida line, and did not return until the first of February. Its troops included Black soldiers of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, whose officers were making the case in print that the regiment would fight.

Two Federal steam tugs lay off the fort the whole night. One shot was fired at Sumter and missed. And: “Water-boat failed to come again last night.” There was no fresh water on the island; every drop the garrison drank was rowed or steamed out from the city.
