A four-day Federal expedition went onto Edisto Island, forty miles down the coast. The planters had gone; the enslaved people had not. Edisto became one of the first places in the South where freedpeople worked land on their own account, three years before the war ended.

Captain Burgess with six officers and 101 men of the 25th South Carolina relieved Captain Allston's detachment. “There is 1 officer wanting to make up the regular detail.” A steam tug was seen. Everything in the fort's daily report is on this scale, and it went on for eighteen months.
