1864The siege

Thirteen of a hundred and twenty-three

A high wind held the shells down: of a hundred and twenty-three thrown at Charleston, only thirteen reached the city, most of them falling on the wharves near the post office. One went up town and burst near the corner of King and Society streets. The gunners on Morris Island were shooting at four and a half miles, and the weather had a vote.

1865The lines

A demonstration at Legareville

From Folly Island, a Federal colonel asked the navy for a demonstration in front of and behind Legareville — the village on John’s Island that had been fought over since 1862 and burned in 1864. The last operations around Charleston were run out of the same creeks as the first.
