Captain Johnston with six officers and a hundred men of the 19th, 23rd and 28th Georgia relieved Captain Groves and the same force. “Foggy this morning; no observations.” The infantry holding Fort Sumter were rotated every few nights, and most of them were Georgians.

A hundred and thirty-two rounds at the city, eighty-seven of them short. The shells that carried fell over the district south of Calhoun Street and east of King — the old lower city, by now largely emptied of its people. Gregg and Simkins fought an artillery duel for three hours.
