“Will do what I can with safety to Charleston”

“Enemy making a serious movement on Saint John’s River, Fla., in force. Will do what I can with safety to Charleston and Savannah to repel him.” The Federal expedition into Florida drew Confederate troops off the Charleston lines and ended at Olustee twelve days later.

Skirmishes at Williston, near White Pond, and at the Edisto crossings at Walker’s and Cannon’s bridges. Behind the front the destruction of the railroad went on methodically, rails heated over burning ties and bent around trees.
