Captain H. T. Kennon with six officers and a hundred men of Colquitt's brigade relieved Captain Culpepper's detachment. Inside the bar lay the ironclads as usual, five tugs and fifteen sailing vessels; outside, five blockaders and two schooners.

Federal troops reached the South Carolina Railroad at Blackville and began tearing it up, with skirmishing at the Edisto railroad bridge. Charleston’s last good land connection with the interior was broken. Everything that followed at Charleston — the evacuation, the fires, the explosion — followed from this.
