Captain China with two lieutenants and fifty men of the 25th relieved Captain Carson's detachment, and Captain Brown with three officers and fifty men of the 27th relieved Lieutenant Lance. Weather hazy. The relief traffic across the harbor never stopped for weather, fire or holidays.

Within a week of the surrender Charleston was a garrison town under Federal military authority, with Black troops on provost duty in a city that had, four years earlier, gone to war to preserve slavery. Schools for freedpeople opened in buildings the Confederacy had used as hospitals.
