“General Finegan met enemy in full force under General Seymour at or near Olustee, Fla., and defeated him with great loss on the 20th instant.” The victory was won largely by troops sent down from the Charleston lines, and they were back on those lines within the month.

Union forces occupied Wilmington, North Carolina — the last major Confederate port. With Charleston taken four days earlier, blockade running as a strategic supply line was finished. The same day, Joseph E. Johnston was assigned command of the remaining Confederate troops in the Carolinas.
