The 55th Massachusetts Infantry, a Black regiment raised as the overflow of the 54th, marched into Charleston singing “John Brown’s Body,” and freedpeople lined the streets. For a regiment recruited in the wake of the 54th’s assault on Battery Wagner, it was the shortest possible answer to the question of what that assault had been for.
