Reconnaissance in the sea islands

A month after Port Royal, Federal gunboats worked up the creeks toward Beaufort and Port Royal Ferry, and the Confederates pulled back to the mainland. Lee’s decision to abandon the islands was being carried out under fire.

Another affair at Murrell’s Inlet, the fourth reported there in a year. Federal boat crews burned schooners and salt works in the creeks; Confederate cavalry drove them off; both sides came back.
