Charleston kept Christmas 1860 as the capital of an independent state five days old, with volunteer companies in the streets, palmetto cockades on coats, and sixty-odd United States soldiers in Fort Moultrie whose commander had already decided what he was going to do the next night.

Confederate field guns brought down to the Stono opened on the USS Marblehead off Legareville on Christmas morning and fought her for about an hour before Federal gunboats and a shore battery drove them off. It was the sharpest action on the Charleston lines that winter, and it happened on Christmas Day.
