Christmas Eve under the shells

Charleston kept Christmas Eve 1863 with the lower wards emptied, business moved above Calhoun Street, and the Federal guns on Morris Island firing at intervals into a city four and a half miles away. The churches south of Broad stood dark; St. Michael’s steeple had been painted black to spoil the range.

The Savannah Squadron’s vessels

A narration written at Charleston on Christmas Eve 1864 described the disposition of the vessels of the Savannah Squadron within the enemy’s lines of investment. Savannah had fallen three days earlier; its ironclads had been burned or scuttled, as Charleston’s would be eight weeks later.
