Foster meets the militia general

Captain Foster of the engineers reported from Fort Moultrie that he had that day interviewed General Schnierle, commanding the militia division in the vicinity, and other prominent citizens. The day before the state seceded, the officers of the two sides were still calling on each other.

The last day of the Union

The committee brought in a draft ordinance of secession consisting, in substance, of one sentence: that the union between South Carolina and the other States was dissolved. The vote was set for the following afternoon.
