Through the winter of 1862–63 Charleston’s runners came and went almost at will: fast Clyde-built steamers making Nassau or Bermuda in three days, and paying for themselves in a single round trip. The Federal navy’s answer — ironclads — was assembling at Port Royal.

From Charleston: a general reported that his services were no longer needed in the department and that he would leave that evening for Wilmington, adding that Sherman had opened communication with his new base by the Ogeechee. The Confederate coast was coming apart from the south.
