Abatis, palisade and wire entanglement

The obstacle in front of the second parallel was carried westward by abatis across an arm of the marsh, then by inclined palisading, then by wire entanglement out to the booms across the creek. Brooks noted that the general commanding had given him more instructions about this obstacle than about all the rest of the work together. The same day the CSS Juno captured a Federal boat’s crew in the harbor.

General Ripley forwarded a report on the western lines for the consideration of the commanding general. While the Federals dug toward Battery Wagner, Charleston was quietly building the inner line on James Island that it held for another eighteen months.
