Work began on Battery Kearny — a half-sunken siege battery for three 30-pounder Parrotts — and on iron embrasure linings cut from the Ruby’s wreck. The officer in charge reported that the prisoners employed on the work did not work satisfactorily. The same day there was an affair at the mouth of Vincent’s Creek.

Beauregard referred a report by Major Manigault to his chief engineer “to know if the objections referred to… have been remedied where practicable.” Manigault commanded the James Island siege train and kept a private journal that is one of the best Confederate accounts of the siege.
