Lincoln settled on the course he had been circling for a month: the expedition would go, it would carry provisions, and South Carolina would be told beforehand. The message to Anderson said help was on the way and asked him to hold out to the twelfth if he could.

The Federal fire ran until five in the morning: 66 mortar shells and one Parrott shell, of which 57 struck. “One negro killed; no injury done to the work.” The enslaved laborers who repaired Fort Sumter every night appear in these reports mostly as casualties.
