The Boston schooner Rhoda H. Shannon, bound for Savannah and off her course, stood in for Charleston bar and was fired on by the Morris Island batteries. She hauled off unhurt. Nine days before the bombardment, the harbor was already shooting at anything that came over the bar.

Eight shots were fired while the harbor obstructions were being taken in before daylight; six struck and did no damage. The boom and obstruction in front of the fort had to be tended in darkness, under aimed fire.
