The joint report of Beauregard’s aides — James Chesnut, A. R. Chisolm, Stephen D. Lee, John Manning, William Porcher Miles and Roger Pryor — records the errand they were sent on: to carry the demand for the evacuation of Fort Sumter across the harbor and bring back the answer.

At about two in the afternoon three of Beauregard’s aides — Chesnut, Chisolm and Lee — put ashore at Fort Sumter and handed Anderson the demand for evacuation. He declined. Seeing them off at the wharf he remarked that if they did not batter the fort to pieces he would be starved out in a few days anyway. The remark was reported to Beauregard, and it kept the guns quiet for another twelve hours.
