Secretary of War L. P. Walker telegraphed Beauregard to demand the evacuation of Fort Sumter, and if it was refused, to reduce it. The same day the second relief expedition sailed from New York Harbor. Both trains were now running, and they were going to meet in Charleston Harbor.

Federal batteries on Tybee Island opened on Fort Pulaski below Savannah with rifled cannon at ranges over a mile — and breached brick that engineers had believed unbreachable. The fort surrendered the next day. Every masonry work on the coast, Fort Sumter above all, was obsolete by the afternoon of 11 April 1862.
